5 Modern Retro Cafes in Kyoto

With its rustic temples and quaint shrines, the first thing that comes to mind is "traditional" when thinking about Kyoto. However, there are also many chic and stylish cafes that are really good at bringing out the modern retro mood. Here are 5 such cafes!

1. Salon de the FRANCOIS

First on the list, we have Salon de the FRANCOIS, a cafe that was established in 1934. This beautiful building with its stained glass windows melds perfectly into the Kyoto background. Staff dressed in classic uniforms wait to greet you at the entrance, and as you step in you can't help but think that you wandered into an Italian Baroque mansion. Try the creamy Rare Cheesecake topped with blueberry sauce (550 JPY). The pleasant sweet and sour taste of this cheesecake goes really well with the coffee served!

2. Soiree

Soiree is an eye-catching cafe with a retro outer appearance. The interior of the store is fully fitted with blue lights, giving it a somewhat mysterious air of fantasy. The house special Jelly Punch (650 JPY), is actually a soda drink with 5 differently colored jelly mixed together. The jelly floats and shines within the soda as if they were jewels, and it is almost a pity to eat them. It does, however, taste really refreshing together with the cider, and this drink is a definite must-try! Why don't you try spending some nice and quiet time in the fantasy-like atmosphere of this cafe?

3. Tsukiji

Tsukiji has retained its appearance since its establishment in 1934. Everything within the cafe was originally designed by its first proprietor. The chic and elegant style of the first proprietor, from the matching colored outer wall tiles to the red velvet upholstered chairs, leaves an impression. Everyone comes here for the Vienna Coffee (600 JPY), made with real fresh cream. The slightly strong coffee is balanced out by the sweetness of the cream, and it's so good you can't help but come back for more!

4. Inoda Coffee Main Branch

Inoda Coffee is a cafe that has not only garnered fans from within Kyoto, but also throughout Japan. While Inoda Coffee has many branches, try visiting the main branch for their breakfast menu! The famous item on the menu is the Kyo No Choshoku (1,380 JPY, incl. tax), which is exclusive to the main branch. This set meal comes with soft and nicely scrambled eggs, ham, salad, fruit juice, croissant, and your choice of coffee or tea, making for a really wholesome breakfast! The classy atmosphere of this cafe is sure to make you enjoy your morning in Kyoto! Also, a special characteristic of this cafe is that the coffee (starting at 560 JPY, incl. tax) is served with milk and sugar already mixed into the coffee.

5. Sarasa Nishijin

Sarasa Nishijin was originally a Japanese bath house that was in operation for over 80 years, but the building was revamped and transformed into the Sarasa Nishijin that we know today. The imposing exterior of the store might make you feel nervous at first, but if you take a step inside, you will notice that the interior has a really expansive atmosphere. The high ceiling and the pleasure in searching for vestiges of the Japanese bath house make for a really unique and charming experience. Aside from drinks and sweets, you can also find fusion food in the menu, and this cafe will make for a really nice lunch or dinner candidate.
