There are many restaurants around Kyoto Station where you can eat tasty yakiniku (grilled meat). Here are five restaurants popular among locals that are conveniently located close to the station.
1. Kyo Horumon Hana
This restaurant specializing in grilled offal skewers is just three minutes on foot from Kyoto Station. It has more than 30 types of offal on its menu, and all are from Japanese Black cows. The offal are cut fresh every day and thoroughly prepared so they are flavorful but with no unpleasant odor. In addition, the sauce prepared especially for each type of offal enhances the flavors. 2. Pound Kyoto Station Branch
This popular restaurant, five minutes away form the Station, is dedicated to serving aged meat. This restaurant ages Japanese Black beef bred on a farm in Kagoshima under precise humidity and temperature control for three weeks and serves it as dry-aged beef. This meat is popular for its bright fragrance and rich flavors.
The restaurant is also unique in that they purchase whole cows so that they can offer a selection of rare parts. Meat from the cow's breast, the chuck eye log, and red meat from the tip of the rump can be eaten here. Sample price: The Kyo set for 2-3 people is 3,800 JPY (excl. tax).
3. Daishogun Kyoto Station Branch
This restaurant next to Kyoto Tower, three minutes on foot from Kyoto Station, serves Japanese Black beef mainly from Kagoshima and Miyazaki. This beef is characterized by fine marbling and a texture that seems to melt in your mouth. This restaurant also marinates the meat in different sauces depending on the cut, and offer two dipping sauces - a "light" sauce and a "rich" sauce. They make every effort to maximize the flavors of the meats. Sample price: Plate of three types of yakiniku for (2,480 JPY (incl. tax)).
Mison, located five minutes on foot from Kyoto Station, offers a wide selection of Korean home cooking.
The specialty is the samgyeopsal pork belly set (980 JPY per person) *can be ordered for two or more. It is an outstanding dish of pork grilled on a hot grill plate so that the surface is crunchy and the inside soft. It is eaten rolled in lettuce with the condiment of your choice, such as kimchi. In addition, there are many dishes appropriate for people who do not like hot food, such as the gently-flavored soup-style Samgyetang (1,800 JPY (excl. tax)).
5. Tammiya Kyoto Station Branch
This is a beef tongue specialty restaurant, which is rare in Kyoto. The tongue they serve here is high-grade, soft and juicy cow tongue from animals that have been fed an abundance of quality grains. The restaurant serves a variety of dishes, from standard dishes to slightly unusual ones including miso grilled tongue and shabu shabu, made using techniques that bring out the natural flavors of tongue.
The recommended dish is the stone grilled beef tongue (880 JPY (excl. tax)). It is cooked using far-infrared heating to give it a fluffy finish with a soft texture and light aftertaste.
