Even locals are big fans! 5 Fancy Cafes in Kanazawa

Kanazawa ranks as one of the biggest consumers of coffee in Japan. People from Kanazawa are also said to be huge lovers of sweets, so there are many cafes in town that are now engaged in a fierce competition. Here is a list of the five stylish cafes in Kanazawa that are particularly recommended.

1. Le Musee De H KANAZAWA

Le Musee De H KANAZAWA is a shop where you will find different kinds of sweets that use only the finest ingredients. The confections made and sold here contain lavish amounts of natural ingredients from local sources in the Hokuriku region, including Kanazawa and Noto. Another appeal of this shop is its refined design. It offers exquisite sweets (priced around 200 JPY – 500 JPY) under the concept of collaboration among "ingredients, art and service." Don’t miss the confections that are only found at the Kanazawa branch! Further, the Concept G (2,430 JPY (incl. tax)) course that is served at the modern tea house will give you a taste of Uji no Hongyokuro, which is considered as the finest Japanese tea, together with a combination of Japanese sweets.

2. Kanazawaya Coffee Shop Main Branch

Kanazawaya Coffee Shop is a shop that is dedicated to the “nel drip” (the term “nel” comes from the “flannel” cloth that is used) brewing system that uses its home-roasted beans. Here, you can taste truly delicious coffee inside a “machiya” (mainly a merchant’s house with a narrow opening and long depth that faces the road) that is filled with the vibe of the historic city of Kanazawa. Here, the brewed coffee made from beans that are roasted by its master roasters (price of brewed coffee starts at 500 JPY) is not murky and has no bitterness or other unpleasant tastes. Try a cup of this shop’s coffee that is carefully made, one cup at a time. When you order coffee, it will come with a side serving of this shop’s homemade Cacao Yokan. This yokan (sweet bean jelly) is made by combining red bean paste (azuki beans and other beans boiled and mixed with sugar) and chocolate from cacao beans that were roasted by the shop. Enjoy the mild sweetness and robust smell of the cacao in this confection.

You will be able to forget the time and relax in this splendid space that is surrounded by antique stuff from Europe. This shop has an extensive menu to choose from, including dishes that use fresh vegetables that are in season (lunch sets are priced at 1,000 JPY and above, while a la carte dishes during dinner cost 350 JPY – 1,280 JPY), and a long list of drinks (priced at 300 JPY and above) such as homemade sangria and local alcohols. There are also handmade sweets (priced at 400 JPY and above) and original coffee blends, so you can also come here for your coffee fix.
