Five Select Sushi Restaurants to Visit in Yokohama, Kanagawa
This article is for those of you who want to make sure you have sushi when you are in Japan. From among the numerous sushi restaurants in Japan, we introduce five in the Yokohama area of Kanagawa Prefecture, including high-end restaurants featured in Michelin Guide and casual restaurants.
This is a free-standing restaurant in a quiet residential neighborhood. Service is by reservation only for both lunch and dinner, and the menu consists of just the Omakase Course (Chef's Recommnded Course) (18,000 JPY (incl. tax)). Each dish, made with specially prepared seasonal ingredients, will amaze you. Most of the ingredients, such as fish with white meat, tuna, squid, herring, shrimp and shellfish, are caught near the shore, and the way in which they are prepared will impress even the sushi connoisseur. No wonder it was given a star in the 2015 Yokohama/Kawasaki/Shonan special edition of the Michelin Guide. It is not in the easiest location to get to, but it is such a wonderful restaurant that it is worth traveling to.
2. Sushi Atsumi
This is also a restaurant that was featured in the 2015 Yokohama/Kawasaki/Shonan special edition of the Michelin Guide and is located away from the station. It also requires reservations for both lunch and dinner, and offers seasonal snacks and courses. The Atsumi's Kaiho Chirashi, (scattered sushi) which is served mid-way through the Atsumi's Omakase (Chef's Recommended Course) (13,000 JPY (excl. tax) course, is an outstanding dish that exemplifies the owner's discerning eye. The owner's eye for quality is also apparent in the choice of tableware, and even in the bamboo chopsticks. The hospitality of the proprietress, who is affectionately called "Nat-chan", makes the experience even more special.
This is a restaurant where you can enjoy the highest quality sushi made with carefully selected fresh, natural ingredients procured directly from Hokkaido. The sushi, made by the sure hands of the owner, who trained at numerous sushi restaurants, goes perfectly with the special homemade soy sauce. The Honjitsu No Omakase (Chef's Daily Recommendation) (12,000 JPY and up), which is only available at the counter, can be started with the best sashimi of the day and sake, or with nigiri sushi in accordance with your preference. This restaurant does not have a case of raw fish on the counter unlike most sushi restaurants, so you'll be closer to the chef and can see the sushi being prepared up close.
4. Katsu Yokohama Sky Building Branch
This is a sushi-train restaurant where you can enjoy sushi with large, fresh ingredients at reasonable prices. The menu of over 250 different types of sushi includes ones made with seasonal seafood, fresh seafood direct from the tank, as well as creative sushi. The prices start as low as 100 JPY (excl. tax) for a plate of two. Unlike many sushi-go-round restaurants where the sushi is made by machines, this restaurant has chefs preparing the sushi in the middle. It is a popular restaurant that is often featured on the media and always has lines, but it is worth the wait.
This is a sushi restaurant where the sushi starts at 50 JPY (excl. tax) a piece. Although the prices are reasonable, the ingredients are all super fresh seafood that the staff procures directly at Tsukiji Market, Yokohama Central Market and Sajima Marina on the Miura Peninsula every morning. Sushi with high-grade ingredients such as the Tsurikinki (300 JPY (excl. tax), named after the restaurant, and the Battle Roll of Fresh Sea Urchin and Scallop (350 JPY (excl. tax)) can be ordered individually as well. The restaurant is a great place to enjoy the sushi with sake, or to stop by for just a few pieces of sushi.
From among the numerous sushi restaurants, we selected ones that are particularly popular or highly rated by sushi aficionados. We hope the information will help in your choice of sushi restaurants.
