Kobe, the Battleground of Sweets! 4 Recommended Must-Visit Patisseries

Kobe is home to many nationally famous patisseries and confectionery makers. Below are four recommended shops that you must check out if you happen to be in this city, which is known as a battleground of sweets!

1. monter plus haut du ciel

monter plus haut du ciel is a shop located in Motomachi that specializes in French confectioneries. With a long line of customers constantly outside its doors, it is a famous patisserie that will make you feel the French spirit that its chef loves so much.
There are 25 – 30 different types of fresh sweets that regularly fill the racks of this shop. Of the wide variety of pastries available, one of the most recommended is the one of the chef’s specialties, the Valancia (476 JPY (excl. tax)). It is made by wrapping dough with embedded almonds and orange-flavored mousse in pure white meringue. You must also try the Sully (466 JPY (excl. tax)), which is a biscuit sandwich with white wine mousse filling that also has pineapples, white peaches, and strawberries inside. It has an exquisite balance, and its main appeal is its refreshing sweetness. There is a salon annexed to this shop, so you can savor the sweets inside the shop.

2. L'AVENUE

L'AVENUE is a patisserie that is tucked into a quiet neighborhood of Yamate, which lies at the heart of Kobe. You can taste the sweets created by its pastry chef, who won the grand prize at the only chocolate competition in the world.
Here, the most famous confectionery is the Mode (650 JPY (incl. tax)), which was the pastry chef’s winning piece at the competition. People love it for its superb balance of hazelnuts, apricots, and chocolate. Sometimes it gets completely sold out within 30 minutes to an hour from the shop’s opening! Aside from that, there are around 20 different types of fresh pastries in store for you here. Some of these sweets use the shop’s best chocolate, such as the L’Hymne (560 JPY (incl. tax)) – which is a milk chocolate mousse cake with pear compote and crème brulee made from tonka beans – and other confectioneries that are filled with seasonal fruits.
