Glass With Designs That Grow?! Glass Products Unique to Furano, Hokkaido

Glass Forest in Furano, located in Furano City’s Rokugo district, is the setting of the Japanese TV drama “Kita no Kuni Kara” (From the Northern Country). It is a shop that sells beautiful glass products in six buildings (Buildings 1 to 6), with each building taking on slightly different themes. At the workshop in Building No. 7, guests get to enjoy a wide variety of experiences and interactive classes, including the Tainetsu Glass no Fuki Glass Taiken (workshop on blowing heat-resistant glass) that is the only one of its kind in Hokkaido.

Glass Forest in Furano is a shop that is found virtually at the center of the Rokugo area, just a little to the east of the crossroads intersection. It is also adjacent to the Hirottekita Ie that also appeared in Kita no Kuni Kara, so you probably won’t get lost. The façade of the building makes it look like some kind of museum, with a warm atmosphere in the air. Make sure to explore this place, starting from Building No. 1!

The closest to the entrance, Building No. 1 houses original glass products made with various designs. Here, the highlight is the series of Shibare Glass products that are only available at Glass Forest in Furano. A Shibare Glass is a mysterious product where the middle layer of glass that is sandwiched by hard glass cracks little by little. Those cracks expand when the glass is used for a long period of time.

Nobody knows when the cracks will start to appear. The outer hard glass is also heat resistant, so it can be used for hot tea or soup. The Shibare Glass is a magical glass where the crack pattern gradually grows even after its purchase. It is such an attractive glass (prices start from 4,212 JPY) that is the only one of its kind in the world, so there is no doubt that if you buy one, it will become your favorite personal glass.

The theme of Building No. 2 is Furano no Haru Kara Aki (Spring to Autumn in Furano). Flower fields, wild animals and other main characters in Furano that paint the summer transform into lovely glasses, bringing a smile to the faces of visitors. The Lavender is also very popular as a souvenir!

Building No. 3 carries original accessories inspired by Japanese themes, while Building No. 5 has chopstick rests, soy sauce containers and other kitchen-related products. At Building No. 6, you can enjoy looking at a crystal collage that is rare even in Japan. Finally, the two-story Building No. 7 is a workshop that will let you soak in the allure of glass through its various hands-on courses, regardless if you are alone or in a group.

The charm of Glass Forest in Furano is its collection of truly original and unique glass products. If you come here, you will be welcomed by these glass pieces that each have a lovely design and will make you feel all warm inside, despite being made of glass. If you happen to be taking a stroll in Rokugo, make sure to drop in!
