The ban on harvesting sea urchins in the Shakotan area of Hokkaido is usually lifted in June. The time to enjoy fabulous fresh sea urchin is June to August. There are many restaurants in the Shakotan area where you can enjoy sea urchin bowls, but this time, we introduce four popular restaurants that we have carefully selected!
Nakamuraya, Proud of Its Outstanding Freshness and Generosity
The Fresh Sea Urchin Bowl (photographed/3,024 JPY) with heaps of freshly harvested Murasaki-uni sea urchin is the restaurant's specialty menu item. This is a restaurant managed by fishermen, so you can thoroughly enjoy the natural flavors of sea urchin with no additives. The Special Sea Urchin Bowl (market price/ten servings per day) piled high with two types of sea urchin (Murasaki-uni and Bafun-uni) is also a must try.
Ushio, a Restaurant Long Beloved by Locals
This is a restaurant with deep roots in the neighborhood where you can enjoy the Murasaki-uni sea urchin that is characterized by a natural sweetness and a texture that seems to melt in the mouth. In addition to the Fresh Uni Bowl (2,900 JPY) that is presented beautifully, there is a wide selection of menu items that include an abundance of northern ingredients. Rinko, Where You Can Try Two Sea Urchins in One Bowl
This restaurant's signature menu is the Fresh Sea Urchin Bowl Red & White (3,500 JPY) with Murasaki-uni and Bafun-uni creating a beautiful contrast in the bowl. The restaurant has a special technique to bring out the rich sweetness of the sea urchins, which are so plump they retain their shape when picked up with chopsticks. Notice the rich taste and creamy texture!
Get Your Fill of Voluminous Fresh Sea Urchin at Misaki!
This is a sea urchin bowl restaurant representative of Shakotan that many people keep going back to both from within Hokkaido and outside. Here, you can enjoy the Fresh Sea Urchin Bowl (2,600 JPY) with plenty of super fresh and sweet Murasaki-uni sea urchin with no additives that the owner goes out to harvest himself. It is recommended to go in the morning, so you can enjoy the food before the crowds.
Some of these restaurants always have lines at the weekend, so be sure to leave early! Once you've had your sea urchin, go out and enjoy the fabulous Shakotan Blue scenery at Cape Kamui and the Shimamui Coast!
