3 Handpicked Cafes and Restaurants Offering a View of Otaru Canal While Dining

When you go sightseeing in Otaru, the one thing that you must not forget to do is take a walk around Otaru Canal. Aside from the promenade between Chuo Bridge that is right underneath Otaru Station, and Asakusa Bridge, you can also try the enchanting feeling of strolling at the northern section of Otaru Canal where there remains an old-fashioned landscape. We tried to choose three recommended spots where people can easily drop in while they go for a walk at the canal. All these places offer a view of the canal from inside their shops while you drink or eat. You’ve got nothing to lose if you know these spots!

PRESSCAFE

The first spot on the list is PRESSCAFE that is found on the northern portion of the canal. It is marked by the cute Vanden Plas Princess car that is set up at the entrance of its shop that is housed in the massive former Shibusawa Warehouse that was built using Sapporo soft stone. A famous British car also sits squarely inside its shop, and you will be able to see the canal through the large windows.

If you are dining here, then order the “Kita Indo-fu Chicken Curry” (1,080 JPY). Using more than 10 spices and cooked slowly in chicken bouillon, it is one of the most popular dishes of this place that offer authentic Indian curry goodness.

The “Matcha no Baked Cheese Set” (830 JPY) is also a popular offering at this place. The cakes and other sweets here are all homemade, and each one of them is really delicious! You have to try them.

Le Quatrieme Ungadori Shop

Le Quatrieme is a popular local cake shop. This Ungadori Shop has a café on the second floor with a commanding view of the canal from its huge windows. It also serves a full-fledged lineup of lunch dishes and sets, making it the perfect spot for a break in the middle of your stroll.

The Lunch Set (1,600 JPY) is a filling set with a second appetizer of warm vegetables, a main dish, bread, and coffee or tea.

Don’t forget the cakes! Recommended here is the Rouge (380 JPY) with the refreshing acidity of raspberries. You can take out the cakes, or you can order them and eat them on the second floor.

Hotel Nord Otaru Padella Restaurant

Chuodori is a street that links JR Otaru Station and Otaru Canal. Hotel Nord Otaru is located at the intersection of Ungadori (harbor railroad) and Chuodori. At the Padella Restaurant on the second floor, you will be able to see the heart of Otaru Canal that is bustling with tourists right from the expansive interiors. What makes this place really popular is its reasonably priced lunch buffet.

Here, the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is open from 11:30 am, with the cutoff of guest admission set to 2:00 pm. It is priced at 1,180 JPY for adults. The buffet offers more than 30 Japanese and Western dishes.

This restaurant serves pastas, fried foods and other dishes that are available all throughout the year, but it also adds substitute dishes depending on the season, thereby making its menu quite colorful. The hotel’s very own “Hokkaido Gyunyu Purin” (Hokkaido milk pudding) has been earning rave reviews, while the “Ankake Yakisoba” (fried noodles with thick starchy sauce) being in its year-round menu is also one of the secrets of its popularity. Don’t miss them!
