Hiroshima has the largest oyster (“kaki”) production output in all of Japan. And Hiroshima Bay, surrounded by islands and capes, is the perfect place for breeding and developing oysters. The oysters that come from this bay are famous throughout the country for their extremely delicious taste. Below are six spots that have been made famous by their oyster dishes!
The oysters served at the famous Yamatsumi have gone through careful examination and selection by the restaurant’s owner. Here, the dishes incorporate branded oysters from Akitsu in Higashi-Hiroshima and Pacific oysters from Etajima in Hiroshima, and customers get to enjoy their rich and creamy taste.
Sample dish: The Akitsu Brand Kaki Komachi L-Size (520 JPY (excl. tax)) is the most popular dish in this restaurant, so it would be best to come and order this dish early.
Founded in 1867, Kanawa is restaurant that is famous for its Kakifune (a pleasure boat with roof that is tethered on the riverbank, where customers can eat oyster dishes) that floats on the river beside the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima. The oysters that they use in their dishes are produced at Fukaura, Okurokami Island in Hiroshima. Known for their robust saltiness and the firm sweetness, these high-grade oysters are incredibly delicious when eaten raw or cooked, such as in the form of Dotenabe (※).
Sample dish: Dotenabe Gozen (3,240 JPY (incl. tax))
※This is a dish that is made by wiping miso inside the pan and then cooking the oysters and vegetables inside the pot while dissolving the miso little by little into the soup stock that has simmered
3. Uotaru Fukuromachi Branch
Uotaru is a popular izakaya (Japanese tavern) that is located near the major tourist spots in Hiroshima City. Here, the dishes incorporate oysters from brands based in Hiroshima’s Etajima area. They are such exquisite oysters that are filled with the taste of the seawater of Seto. Customers get to choose from a wide array of dishes in the menu, from the staple yakigaki (baked oysters), up to deep-fried oysters. The prices of the dishes vary depending on the market price of the oysters at the time they are delivered to the shop. Foreign language menus (English, Chinese (simplified and traditional) and Korean) are available.
4. Suishin Main Shop
Suishin, which opened in 1967, is a restaurant that is dedicated to local Hiroshima cuisine. Here, fresh Hiroshima oysters are served all year round, with the Hiroshimaken-san Yakigaki Yon-shu Aji Kurabe (four types of baked oysters) (2,400 JPY (incl. tax)) coming highly recommended. This set meal will let you enjoy four different tastes of oysters, including the dish with anchovy sautéed in garlic and butter, and the simple oysters baked in salt.
YamaHinata is a shop where you can taste different kinds of seafood that are caught from Seto Inland Sea. This restaurant takes pride in its dishes that use oysters produced in Hiroshima’s Etajima town. Here, guests get to enjoy fresh oysters that were painstakingly bred, as they have to be moved to a different area in the sea depending on their stage of development. English menu is available.

Wanari is a famous restaurant that has been included in the Michelin Guide Special Edition. Here, guests can dine on fresh oysters produced in Hiroshima anytime of the year. Its wide array of dishes have been gaining rave reviews from customers, ranging from the classic dishes such as the raw oysters, up to such creative offerings such as pizza topped with smoked oysters. English menu is available.
