Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is a regional dish loved by people from Hiroshima, and is made by grilling a flour-based batter thinly like a crepe and topping it with cabbage, noodles, and other ingredients. Here are five okonomiyaki restaurants that have received high praise on gourmet websites!
1. Mitchan Sohonten Hatchobori Main Shop
This is the original restaurant that made Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki into the form it is today. The thick okonomi sauce, the inclusion of noodles, cabbage, and bean sprouts, and the way of eating it with a spatula are all ideas from Mitchan Sohonten. It's a super-famous restaurant, so expect lines. How about the orthodox Soba Niku Tamago (Noodle, Meat, Egg) (750 JPY) or the recommended DX Special (1,500 JPY)? They go well with the local spice, lemon tabasco, available on the tables! There are five locations in Hiroshima and one in Hatsukaichi.
2. Yagenbori Hassyou
This is a super-popular Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki restaurant with constant lines that was established forty years ago. The recommended dish is the voluminous Soba-nikutama (864 JPY (incl. tax)), which almost every customer orders. It is eaten by mixing soft-cooked egg with sweet cabbage and noodles that have been cooked to be crunchy. It's fun to watch the restaurant staff dexterously prepare it on the grill. It takes 20 to 30 minutes to cook, so you may enjoy having some side dishes, such as oysters (winter) or scallops (spring and fall) cooked on the hibachi grill while you wait.
3. Denko-Sekka Ekimaehiroba Branch
This is a restaurant with red, round stools at the counter, where you can have a new type of creative Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. The recommended dish is the Denko-Sekka (1,050 JPY), as featured in the photograph, which is also the restaurant's name. The okonomiyaki is made by putting a large amount of shiso Japanese basil on top of grilled noodles, covering them with a thin batter cooked with cabbage, bean sprouts and meat. It is then further enveloped with runny eggs like an omurice (rice wrapped in an omelet), and finally covered with chopped scallions. It's sometimes referred to as 3D okonomiyaki. With an abundance of perilla and cabbage, it is healthier and lighter than it looks. Of course, you can have a made-to-order version by selecting some of the variety of toppings, such as cheese, that they offer.
This is a famous restaurant that was included in the 2013 Hiroshima Michelin Guide. They bring out the sweetness of cabbage by carefully steaming it. Only a little okonomi sauce is on it, so you may expect it to be lacking in flavor, but it actually has a spicy flavor that does not rely on the okonomi sauce, since it's made with an abundance of white pepper, garlic, fish powder, and kombu seaweed. The noodles are also cooked to crunchy and aromatic perfection. You'll be satisfied with the care taken to make each okonomiyaki. The okonomiyaki menu starts at a reasonable 600 JPY. If you call in advance, you can get take-out too.
5. Okonomiyaki Koshida Honten
This is a well-established okonomiyaki restaurant that has been handed down through three generations. The iron grill that has a presence in the retro interior has been used since the restaurant opened. The conversation across the grill with the lively staff is part of the fun. You can also enjoy the exhilaration of seeing the okonomiyaki and teppanyaki grilled right in front of your eyes. The recommended dish is the Koshida Special (1,030 JPY (incl. tax)). The substantial noodles and the rich sauce are to die for. The hotcakes grilled on the hibachi grill are popular as dessert, particularly among women. Try them with ice cream on top to complete your meal. Another advantage of the restaurant is that it is open till 3:00 am.
You can't go to Hiroshima and leave without having okonomiyaki! They are filled with vegetables, so you'll find they go down easily even if they are large and look substantial.
