Five Restaurants in Fukuoka with Outstanding Seafood Bowls
Fukuoka, which faces one of the world's top fishing grounds, Genkainada Sea, is famous for its seafood. Here are five restaurants where you can enjoy outstanding kaisendon (rice bowls with fresh seafood served on vinegared rice).
1. Kaisendon Hinode
This is a restaurant that is open 365 days a year where you can enjoy tasty kaisendon year round. Most of the bowls are also conveniently offered in small portions. The Hinode Special (1,700 JPY (incl. tax)), with ten types of fresh fish procured that day is the recommended dish. There is also the My Donburi A Set (1,650 JPY (incl. tax)), which allows you to choose four types of seafood from a selection. Seafood toppings can also be ordered separately, so why not create your very own kaisendon?
This is a restaurant where you can enjoy kaisendon and chazuke (tea poured over rice and other ingredients) made with an abundance of local fish in a space that feels like a Japanese-style cafe. The recommended menu item is the Nishoku-don Set (1,690 JPY (incl. tax)), which includes the popular Isoragi Kaisendon and Sea Bream Sashimi Chazuke. You can fully enjoy the flavors of the kaisendon and the sea bream sashimi and rice with agodashi (broth made from fly fish) poured over them. If you want to recreate the restaurant's flavors at home, you can purchase the Isoragi Sauce with Sesame (870 JPY (incl. tax)) or Isoragi Soup (870 JPY (incl. tax)), which are recommended as souvenirs.
Looks like computer graphics? This is a restaurant where you can enjoy such visually astounding kaisendon (open for lunch on weekdays only; 11:00 am - 2:00 pm). The photograph is of the Tokujo Omakase Kaisen Donburi (1,800 JPY (excl. tax)). The contents differ depending on the day's procurement, but this is a reasonable price for so much seafood. When eating it, carefully transfer the seafood to a small plate. You may find some small surprises, such as stewed fish inside the shells, so enjoy them. You can have the seafood on its own as sashimi, or together with the rice. It is a kaisendon that is fun to look at and tasty to eat.
4. Hakata Uogashi Ichiba Kaikan Branch
This is a restaurant in the Ichiba Kaikan building of the Fukuoka Central Wholesale Fish Market. Here, you can enjoy tasty kaisendon right next to the fish market. The recommended super-fresh kaisendon starts at just 650 JPY. The surprisingly reasonable prices, with even the highest grade kaisendon priced at 1,620 JPY, is one of the reasons for its popularity. It opens at 7:00 am, so you can go for breakfast.
5. Daiichi Tamaya Sushi Airport Terminal Building 2 Branch
This is a sushi restaurant where you can enjoy seasonal fish straight from the Fukuoka Central Fish Market. The recommended item is the Hakata Chirashijo (1,944 JPY (excl. tax)). Fresh seasonal seafood is placed atop a bed of kinshi tamago (thinly sliced Japanese omelet) and oboro (seasoned minced fish). The restaurant provides three types of soy sauce - the sweeter soy sauce from Kyushu, the saltier Kanto-style soy sauce, and low sodium soy sauce. The sweeter sauce with its deep flavors is recommended for local fish, but if you prefer a lighter flavor, go with the Kanto-style soy sauce. Try comparing the various soy sauces while enjoying your food here.

In Fukuoka, it is usual to have sashimi with a sweeter sashimi soy sauce. Fish caught locally goes well with local soy sauce! We hope you'll enjoy super-fresh kaisendon with local flavors.
